Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty - Abu Dhabi - Dubai
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure that aims to reduce the size of the stomach using an endoscope. It is also known as endoscopic sleeve or endosleeve.
During an ESG procedure, a flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is inserted through the mouth and into the stomach. The endoscope allows the surgeon to visualize the stomach and perform the necessary steps to create a sleeve-like shape without making any incisions on the abdomen.
The procedure involves suturing the stomach from the inside, effectively reducing its size and capacity. This restriction in stomach size helps in promoting weight loss by limiting the amount of food that can be consumed during a meal. It also triggers a feeling of fullness and satiety, leading to a decreased appetite.
ESG is typically performed under general anesthesia and usually takes around 60 to 90 minutes to complete. It is considered a relatively safe procedure with a lower risk of complications compared to traditional surgical weight loss options such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy.
Benefits of Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty:
- 1. Minimally invasive: ESG is performed using a scope inserted through the mouth, eliminating the need for external incisions on the abdomen.
- 2. Reduced risk: Since it does not involve major surgery, ESG carries a lower risk of complications compared to traditional weight loss surgeries.
- 3. Shorter recovery time: The recovery period after ESG is generally shorter compared to surgical procedures. Most patients can go home the same day or the day after the procedure.
- 4. Reversible: Unlike surgical weight loss procedures, ESG is reversible. The sutures placed in the stomach can be removed if necessary.
- 5. Potential for significant weight loss: ESG has shown promising results in terms of weight loss. Studies have reported an average excess weight loss of around 50-60% after the procedure.
