Mouthguards, also known as mouth protectors or sports guards, are dental devices that cover and protect the teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues from injury during sports or other physical activities. They are typically made of a flexible and durable material, such as silicone or thermoplastic, and are designed to fit over the upper teeth.

The primary function of a mouthguard is to absorb and distribute the impact forces that can occur during contact sports or activities, thereby reducing the risk of dental injuries, including chipped or broken teeth, lip and cheek injuries, and jaw fractures. Additionally, a mouthguard can help prevent injuries to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and reduce the severity of concussions by cushioning the impact to the jaw.

There are three main types of mouthguards:

  1. 1.  Stock mouthguards: These are pre-formed, ready-to-wear mouthguards that come in standard sizes and shapes. They are inexpensive but may not provide the best fit or comfort since they cannot be adjusted.
  2. 2.  Boil-and-bite mouthguards: These mouthguards are made from a thermoplastic material that softens in hot water. The user places the mouthguard in hot water, allows it to soften, and then bites into it to create a customized fit. Boil-and-bite mouthguards are available in most sporting goods stores and offer a better fit compared to stock mouthguards.
  3. 3.  Custom-fitted mouthguards: These mouthguards are individually designed and fabricated by a dentist or a professional dental laboratory. They provide the best fit, comfort, and protection since they are custom-made based on an impression of the individual's teeth. Custom-fitted mouthguards are more expensive than the other types but offer the highest level of protection.

It's important to note that mouthguards should be worn not only during contact sports like football, boxing, and hockey but also during other activities with a risk of dental injury, such as basketball, soccer, wrestling, and even recreational activities like skateboarding and gymnastics.

To ensure optimal protection, it's essential to choose a mouthguard that fits well, covers all the necessary teeth, and doesn't obstruct breathing or speech. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the mouthguard are also important to ensure its effectiveness and longevity. Additionally, mouthguards should be replaced periodically as they can wear out over time or due to changes in the shape of the mouth or teeth.

How do I care for my mouthguard?

Proper care for your mouthguard includes: Rinsing it before and after each use. Brushing it with a toothbrush and mild soap (avoid toothpaste as it can be abrasive). Storing it in a protective case when not in use. Avoiding exposure to heat, which can deform the mouthguard.

Can I wear a mouthguard all night?

Yes, if it is a custom-fitted mouthguard designed for bruxism or TMJ issues, it can be worn overnight. However, it's essential to follow your dentist’s recommendations regarding duration and use.

Do mouthguards help with snoring?

Some types of mouthguards, specifically those designed for sleep apnea, can help reduce snoring by keeping the airway open. Consult your dentist to determine if this type of mouthguard is suitable for you.

How long does a mouthguard last?

The lifespan of a mouthguard varies based on usage and care. Custom mouthguards can last several years with proper care, while boil-and-bite options may need to be replaced every 6 months to a year, especially if they show signs of wear or damage.
