Dental crowns and bridges are common restorative dental treatments used to repair and replace damaged or missing teeth. Let's take a closer look at each of them:

  1. 1.  Dental Crown: A dental crown is a custom-made cap that is placed over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. It is typically used when a tooth is severely decayed, weakened, cracked, or has undergone root canal treatment. The crown covers the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line and is cemented into place. Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys, or a combination of materials, depending on the location and requirements of the tooth.
  2. The process of getting a dental crown usually involves two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared by removing any decayed or damaged portions, and impressions are taken to create a custom crown. A temporary crown is placed over the tooth to protect it. In the second visit, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is carefully fitted and cemented onto the tooth.

  3. 2.  Dental Bridge: A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by bridging the gap between the remaining teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth, called pontics, held in place by dental crowns, which are placed on the adjacent healthy teeth or dental implants. The crowns act as anchors for the bridge, providing stability and support.

Similar to dental crowns, the process of getting a dental bridge also involves multiple visits to the dentist. In the first visit, the abutment teeth (adjacent healthy teeth) are prepared by removing a small portion of their enamel to accommodate the crowns. Impressions are then taken to create a custom bridge. A temporary bridge may be placed while the permanent bridge is being fabricated. In the subsequent visit, the temporary bridge is removed, and the permanent bridge is fitted and cemented onto the abutment teeth.

Both dental crowns and bridges are durable and long-lasting restorations. They improve the function, aesthetics, and overall oral health by restoring the structure and integrity of the teeth. However, it's important to maintain good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, to ensure the longevity of crowns and bridges.
