Boil-and-bite mouthguards are available in most sporting goods stores and offer a better fit compared to stock mouthguards.
- 3. Custom-fitted mouthguards: These mouthguards are individually designed and fabricated by a dentist or a professional dental laboratory. They provide the best fit, comfort, and protection since they are custom-made based on an impression of the individual's teeth. Custom-fitted mouthguards are more expensive than the other types but offer the highest level of protection.
It's important to note that mouthguards should be worn not only during contact sports like football, boxing, and hockey but also during other activities with a risk of dental injury, such as basketball, soccer, wrestling, and even recreational activities like skateboarding and gymnastics.
To ensure optimal protection, it's essential to choose a mouthguard that fits well, covers all the necessary teeth, and doesn't obstruct breathing or speech. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the mouthguard are also important to ensure its effectiveness and longevity. Additionally, mouthguards should be replaced periodically as they can wear out over time or due to changes in the shape of the mouth or teeth.
